Overview

At the forefront of one of the nation’s most significant EV battery projects,
Motor City Electric Co. led the electrical construction of the StarPlus Energy battery production plant—a ground-up, large-scale facility built in partnership with Stellantis and Samsung SDI. As the main electrical contractor, Motor City Electric managed the entire project and worked with six subcontractors, including our own subsidiary, Stelko Electric.

This $2.5 billion joint venture will deliver a 3.3 million-square-foot factory in
Kokomo, Indiana, dedicated to electric-vehicle battery production. Scheduled to begin operations in 2025, the facility will launch with an annual production capacity of 23 gigawatt hours (GWh), with plans to grow to 33 GWh in the coming years. The plant will supply batteries for a range of electric vehicles produced at Stellantis’ North American assembly plants, playing a pivotal role in advancing sustainable transportation and energy.

Our team’s involvement is instrumental in bringing this vision to life, with responsibilities that include:

  • Preconstruction engineering, budgeting, and design
  • General contracting for electrical construction
  • Construction BIM modeling
  • Prefabrication
  • Installation of medium-voltage raceways and wiring
  • Construction of duct banks
  • Installation of a switch house and substation
  • Power monitoring and fiber/communication cabling
  • Medium-voltage stress cones and splicing
  • Temporary power and lighting throughout the site
  • Grounding and exothermic welding across the site
  • Installation of lighting and receptacles
  • Fire alarm system installation

This landmark project is not only a major investment in advanced manufacturing but also a significant step toward a cleaner future.
