Pioneering Patient-Centered Care with Cutting-Edge Technology
Motor City Electric Co. was selected as the electrical contractor to support the construction of the new South Patient Tower at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital. This eight-story, 301,000 sq. ft. facility is designed to be one of the country’s most technologically advanced and patient-centered healthcare environments. The tower features 204 private rooms, and its focus on integrating technology enhances patient care, safety, and satisfaction.
Intelligent Care System
At the heart of this state-of-the-art facility is the Intelligent Care System, the first of its kind in the nation. This advanced system equips hospital staff with real-time data and tools that help deliver the highest standard of care. The system continuously monitors patient vitals, supports fall prevention, and allows direct voice communication between nursing staff and patients, ensuring prompt and personalized care.

Key features of the Intelligent Care System include:
Handwashing Station Sensors: Radio signals detect caregivers as they enter and exit rooms, ensuring hygiene compliance.
In-Room Equipment Alerts: Equipment such as cardiac monitors sends automatic alerts to medical staff.
Patient Remote Controls: Patients can communicate their needs (e.g., pain management) via remote controls that send signals to staff iPhones.
Smart Beds: Beds are equipped with sensors that alert staff when high-risk patients attempt to leave their beds.
Motor City Electric Co. was integral in powering this sophisticated system, handling everything from electrical room construction and switchgear installation to conduit running and cable splicing. Our team helped create an efficient, reliable, and safe environment for both patients and staff.
Patient and Family-Centered Design
The South Patient Tower is designed with the well-being of both patients and families in mind. Amenities that enhance comfort and convenience include complimentary Wi-Fi, dedicated family zones in each patient room, sofa beds with flip-up tables, and personal speakers that allow visitors to read or watch TV without disturbing patients.
The hospital’s inviting atmosphere extends throughout the building. The main lobby features a large fireplace, abundant natural light from skylights, and a welcoming décor that incorporates the works of Michigan artists such as Monty Nagler, Carl Sams II, and Darcel Daneau. Additional on-site amenities include convenience and gift stores, a pharmacy, and patient-focused services that contribute to an overall healing environment.
Conclusion
The South Patient Tower at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital represents a leap forward in healthcare design, combining advanced technology with patient-centric care. Motor City Electric Co. is proud to have contributed to this groundbreaking project, helping create a hospital environment where both patients and their families can thrive in a safe, efficient, and technologically advanced setting.
